Post Asus P5N32-E SLI
On this page: http://communities.vmware.com/message/976856#976856 (as found on the Whitebox HCL page here at vm-help), ESX 3.5 (not ESXi 3.5) is reported to work with both SATA and onbord NICs working after hacking /etc/vmware/pciid/sata_nv.xml

Quote:
I got the sata controller on Asus P5N32-E SLI working after changing the following:

Edited the file /etc/vmware/pciid/sata_nv.xml
Changed the last id to: 037f
And the name changed to MCP55 SATA Controller.

Then i did run the esxcfg-pciid

Rebooted, and it started like a dream :)

The 2 onboard network cards did work out of the box :)
(Some Nvidia network card)

Is this board likely to support ESXi with a custom oem.tgz? I have installed on the board using ide mode install, but the board has died. I am looking to get it replaced under warranty, and would like to install ESXi 3.5u4 or ESXi 4 once I have it up and running again.

I have one other question also. If I install ESXi on a Dual Core Celeron (no VT support), will a later upgrade to VT enabled CPU (ie Q6600) allow me to create 64-bit machines? Will I need to update or reinstall anything? (My guess is "No" but I figure I should confirm)

Thanks,

Collin

With ESXi 3.5 the MCP55 controller will have the ide driver loaded so you would have to use the IDE install method (see the homepage) to get ESXi on the PC, but you wouldn't have to hack any files past the install. ESXi 4.0 will load the sata_nv driver for the controller, so with it I think you would get away with no changes to get ESXi installed.

For the q6600 you should just be able to swap it with issues. I haven't done that specifically but have added to the CPU count and that's always been a matter of just rebooting.

Nice! Thanks for the info. This answered my question in the other thread you have already replied to.

Thanks,

Collin

Hi,

I installed ESXi 4.0 on Asus P5N32-SLI Deluxe on a USB pendrive. SATA works fine. One embedded NIC also works fine, but another embedded and PCI card do not. They are not even discovered. AFAIR the very first install without a PCI NIC ended up with two embedded NICs discovered...

Any ideas?

ESXi doesn't have a Galileo NIC driver. What's the PCI ID for the 82557 NIC?

Dave,

Seems it is Marvel Yukon 8053 NIC. What do you think? I have seen posts on custom oem.tgz with inclusion of the driver. It should work, shouldn't it?

Success!

ESXi 4.0 installed with customized oem.tgz (Marvel Yukon NIC). NVidia NIC worked out of the box.
